Learn about reading music and tab, understanding music theory, ear-training and performance tips

Alongside learning your instrument, it can be useful to understand how aspects of music theory work and are applied.

Many of these areas are covered during instrumental lessons, but sometimes it is useful to spend time exploring one area for a fuller understanding.

  • Learn about reading and writing music notation and tab;
  • How harmony works and what chords are;
  • Why scales are important to understand and how these relate to improvisation;
  • Train your ears to recognise harmony, relate pitches and understand rhythms;
  • Find out about your instrument and  how to vary the sound you make;
  • Pick up tips for performing and playing music with other instrumentalists.
